Nissan Motor Cosaid it may build Infiniti cars in China and will locate its global headquarters for the luxury brand in Hong Kong as it eyes wealthy consumers in mushrooming markets in Asia and elsewhere, Economic Times reported.
The automobile company is planning a factory in Hubei province, owned by its JV partner Dongfeng Motor Co, the news reports said.
“We are considering production in China,” Shiro Nagai, Nissan spokesman said. “No decision to do so, however, had yet been made,” he added.
Infiniti was launched in1989 as a luxury brand for overseas markets. Infiniti models are currently manufactured at plants in Tochigi and Fukuoka prefectures in Japan, which have a combined annual capacity of about 200,000 units, the reports added.
Under a six year business plan that Japan’s number 2 automaker dubs, Nissan Power 88 the company is expecting to hike sales of the luxury line to 500,000 within six years.
Meanwhile, its new Infiniti headquarters in Hong Kong, which will be in charge for global marketing, will employ 100 people, Nissan said.
Nissan Motor Company is a multinational automaker headquartered in Japan. The company was earlier a core member of the Nissan Group, but has become more independent after it’s restructuring under Carlos Ghosn, the company’s CEO.
