The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares closed 0.2 percent lower at 852.62 points
The FTSE 100 index ended 0.22 percent down Tuesday to 4425.54, as losses in banks and miners offset gains in oil and phone company Vodafone.
The French CAC-40 index closed at 3,231.1 points, down 17.57 or 0.54 percent
Germany's DAX index ended at 4,854.11 points, down 12.8 or 0.26
The Swiss market index closed at 5,346.03 points, down 12.91 or 0.24 percent.
However in Italy, All Share Mibtel index closed up 140 points or 0.88 percent at 15,969.
In Asia, the benchmark Nikkei shed 153.37 points to 9,298.61, after rising 134.38 points on Monday to its highest close since November.
The Hang Seng Index finished the session up 65.69 points at 17,153.64.
