Pranab Mukherjee has resigned from the post of finance minister on Tuesday to contest for the July 19 presidential election as the candidate of the ruling United Progressive Alliance, the news reports said.

He met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his 7 Race Course Road residence and put forth his resignation.

Pranab Mukherjee told the reporters at his North Bloc office that he is leaving his job as Finance Minister to embark on a new journey. 

The 77-year old Finance Minister said in his last message as FM to the media reporters, “I feel honored and humbled on my nomination as a presidential candidate of the UPA-II, supported by SP, BSP, JDU Shiv Sena, CPI-M, Forward Bloc and some other parties.”

After the resignation given by Pranab Mukherjee, the Prime Minister took the responsibility of the Finance Ministry portfolio at a time when the country’s economy is going through a bad state of affairs.

The veteran Congress leader took his last walk through the corridors of cream and red sandstone British era building that housed the finance ministry.  

Talking about the state of the economy, India’s annual industrial growth slipped 0.1% in April even as the rupee slumped to an all time low of Rs 57.92 against the dollar.

Government also announced a number of measures to revive the economy but it was too little to cheer the market. 

Mukherjee said, besides the United Progressive Alliance Partners, he enjoyed support of several regional parties including the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Janta Dal (United). He also said, “I feel humbled by the support.”  He also stated, “I know that not every decision which I have taken might have been right but I have taken those decisions keeping in view the interests of the people.”

Singh is a renowned economist will be assisted by 2 ministers of state namely SS Palanimanickam and Namo Narain Meena.  Earlier, Singh had kept charge of Finance Ministry for a short span duringthe UPA-I when P Chidambaram was moved to Home in wake of Mumbai terror strikes in November 2008.
